So often we rush through tasks and in our haste to simply get all of our commitments or obligations off of our to-do list we fail to see what is lovely and good in them. We can often find that sense of wonder or calm in the everyday simply by slowing down whatever we’re doing.
Instead of rushing through the dishes, take the time to feel the warm, soapy water on your hands. Feel the meditative motion and focus on slowly moving the sponge around each part of the object you’re washing.
Instead of rushing through your meals, take the time to chew and savor each bite. Feel the texture of your food. Taste its nuanced flavors. Enjoy sitting down at your table with your family.
Instead of rushing through a story so you can hurry your child off to bed, take the time to read with passion. Use voices and facial expressions to convey the characters words and actions. Answer your child’s questions about the text and listen to his observations about the illustrations.
Whatever task is before you, slow down and focus your mind on it. You may discover something you hadn’t noticed before, or simply gain a new perspective on something you already knew.
“Restore your attention or bring it to a new level by dramatically slowing down whatever you’re doing.” ― Sharon Salzberg
Do you ever deliberately slow down what you’re doing? How does it make you feel?
I don’t usually comment, but I do read and appreciate your blog posts.
Thank you for today’s reminder. This is actually one of my New Year’s resolutions – to be more in the moment and fully present in whatever I am doing instead of rushing through something in order to check it off and move to the next thing. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. It’s a good reminder for me too.
