Thought for the Day: Lao Tzu

Thought for the Day: Lao Tzu

“Time is a created thing. To say ‘I don’t have time,’ is like saying, ‘I don’t want to’.” — Lao Tzu

That is, if something is truly important to you, you will make time for it. And if you’re not willing to make the time for it, is it really as important as you say?

Consider this when you’re pondering whether to commit larger things, such as time spent with friends and family. But think of it also when you’re faced with smaller decisions, such as your child asking you to play a game with him or to read him a book.

As you’re thinking through your priorities and your commitments, remember this: what we say yes to, is what we are saying we want in our lives.

  1. I love this. It’s very true – I’ve been trying to avoid saying things like ‘I’ve been busy’ or things like that to people. Everyone is busy, it’s just a matter of how we prioritize our time. The other thing I’ve been thinking about recently is the fact that when we say ‘yes’ to one thing, we’re saying ‘no’ to something else. Time while made up, is a fixed asset, so everything we agree to do takes away from something else, for better or for worse.

    • Yes! I’m trying to expunge those words from my speech too. It’s tougher than I thought it would be. And life is all about choices, with time and everything else.
