A Day at the County Fair

Each year when the County Fair is in full swing, we make a venture out to our local fairgrounds. Our fair is small (very, very small compared to many other county fairs – but then our county is pretty small), but that’s part of what makes it a great experience.

My boys love animals, so we spent lots of time wandering through the animal barns.… Continue reading

Citizen Science: Keeping a Bee Box

Citizen Science: Keeping a Bee BoxFor the second year in a row, we’ve decided to participate in a local Citizen Science project. Scientists at our local university are running a project called The Bees Needs. In this study, they’re examining the native bees and wasps in the greater Boulder, Colorado area.

Participating has been a fun way for us to learn more our local pollinators, as well as to teach my boys some of the basic principles of conducting a scientific experiment.… Continue reading

Making an Edible Fruit Flag for the 4th of July

While discussing the significance of the 4th of July in American history, my 6-year-old had the idea of making an edible flag entirely out of fruit to eat during our celebration. He loves fruit, so he was excited to be in charge of preparing a big tray of “yummy treats.”

His preparations for this undertaking gave us the opportunity to talk a bit about the American flag, what it looks like now, and how it has changed over the course of our country’s 239 year history.… Continue reading

Get Moving: Go Fly a Kite

Get Moving: Go Fly a KiteWe’ve been trying for weeks to go kite flying. We’ve had our kite ready to go. We’ve had several afternoon playdates scheduled with friends at an open park that would be great for kite flying. We’ve even practiced running the kite around our yard (though not too much – we have far too many trees to be a good yard for flying a kite).… Continue reading

Woolbur, by Leslie Helakoski

Woolbur, by Leslie HelakoskiWoolbur is a fun, charming book about a young sheep who likes to do everything in his own way. If your little one prefers running with the dogs to standing still with the herd, you may see your child’s free spirit reflected in Woolbur’s own. This is a great story for helping kids to see that being who you are, even if it’s very different from everybody else, is part of what makes life – and the world around us – a delightful place to be.… Continue reading

Working in the Garden: Planting Irises

Working in the Garden: Planting IrisesWe’re slowly working on reclaiming the garden spaces around our home that have been awash in weeds since the big Boulder flood came through our yard and home in 2013. Last year we pulled all of the weeds in one bed and planted a bunch of strawberries. While they haven’t spread as much as I thought they would, we’re thrilled that they came back again this year (I love perennials) and seem to be doing well.… Continue reading

How We Entertained our Kids [Screen Free!] on a 15 Hour Road Trip

How we Entertained our Kids [Screen Free!] on a 15 Hour Road TripWe spent 15 hours in the car starting at our house and driving until we reached my brother’s home, with many rest and gas stops in between. The temperatures we encountered ranged from 28 (Vail Pass) to 105 degrees (Las Vegas). One child vomited from car sickness. It could have easily been 2 boys plus one mama; so that’s not too bad, all things considered.… Continue reading

The Importance of Cooking with Kids

There are many things that I want to teach my children before they leave the house. While the most important of these have to do with character, perspective, and attitude, there are quite a few academic skills and also a good number of life skills that I want to be sure they master. I want my boys to grow into self-sufficient adults.… Continue reading
