Food Fun for Kids: Bread Shapes

Food Fun for Kids: Bread Shapes

I’m fortunate that my boys are good eaters. They eat pretty much everything we put in front of them without complaint. They eat a huge variety of foods, and have a broader pallet than many adults we know.

But they still get excited by fun or unusual foods. We made bread so that my 6-year-old could have his first sandwich. With later bread slices, he had the idea of making the bread into fun shapes. … Continue reading

Grain-Free Bread

Grain-Free BreadThe other day we read a book that involved sandwiches. Since we don’t eat grains, we don’t regularly have bread in our house. As a result, my kids have never had a traditional sandwich. They’ve certainly had their share of roll-ups, but not a regular two-piece-of-bread-with-filling-in-the-middle sandwich. After reading the book, my 6-year-old really wanted to try a sandwich.

While I’m very careful about the food that I feed to my kids, both for health and food allergy reasons, I also try hard to make sure that they don’t feel deprived on our diet.… Continue reading

Simplify Saturday: Exit Cabinet

Simplify Saturday: Exit CabinetToday I’m setting up an Exit Cabinet, a place to store all of the things that I need to take with me when I leave the house.

Right now, the items I need to gather and bring with me are scattered about. My bag is on the floor of the coat closet. The deposits I need to take to the bank and the items I need to mail at the post office sit in a pile on my desk.… Continue reading

40 Ways to Reduce Plastic Exposure

40 Ways to Reduce Plastic ExposureWhile plastics are pervasive and convenient, they come with a heavy toxic load. (You can find more information on the Hazards of Plastics HERE).

Some plastic exposure is beyond our immediate control. This type of exposure occurs when toxins from plastics are released during the production process and end up in our air, land, and waterways.

However, we also encounter plastics that we have more of a choice about: those used to package and store food, drinks, and medications, as well as the products we choose to keep and use within our homes.… Continue reading

Homemade Elderberry Syrup

Homemade Elderberry SyrupElderberry syrup is a great, traditional way to boost immunity. Our naturopath recommends taking some at the first sign of a cold or flu. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to find high-quality organic elderberry syrup that doesn’t contain vegetable glycerin.

We try to avoid foods containing vegetable glycerin as a preservative because glycerin can coat your teeth and thereby prevent the natural tooth remineralization process.… Continue reading

Today: Looking toward spring

Today: Looking toward springThe huge amount of snow we’ve received over the last two weeks left all of us ready to celebrate when it was followed by a week of bright, sunny 50+ degree days.

Warm sun rays, natural vitamin D, and a general longing to be outdoors after staying snuggled up inside for a couple of weeks has energized all of us. After spending the afternoon playing in the sandbox, my 6-year-old asked, “Mama, I know there’s still some snow, but can we plant our garden tomorrow?”… Continue reading

Thought for the Day: Hanh

“Feelings, whether of compassion or irritation, should be welcomed, recognized, and treated on an absolutely equal basis; because both are ourselves. The tangerine I am eating is me. The mustard greens I am planting are me. I plant with all my heart and mind. I clean this teapot with the kind of attention I would have were I giving the baby Buddha or Jesus a bath.… Continue reading

Making Art Teaches Mindfulness and More

We make a lot of art in our house. I keep a wide array of open-ended supplies available, and my boys have a space that they can work on their own projects (my toddler, with some help; my 6-year-old, mostly independently). While I frequently choose and set up supplies for my toddler, my older son has full creative control over his art experience, and he’ll help himself to whichever supplies will help him to bring his vision to fruition.… Continue reading

Pureed Cauliflower “Mashed Potatoes”

Pureed Cauliflower “Mashed Potatoes”  If you’re looking for a way to incorporate more vegetables into your diet, or simply looking to lower the glycemic index of the foods that you’re consuming, this recipe is a great comfort-food inspired way to do both.

While it doesn’t taste exactly like mashed potatoes (it is, after all cauliflower), I’ve surprised many people by telling them that they were eating cauliflower.… Continue reading

Simplify Saturday: Decluttering Plastics

Simplify Saturday: Decluttering PlasticsToday I am again aiming to eliminate clutter around our home. In light of my post on the The Problem with Plastics, I set out to remove at least ten plastic items from our home. As with my other decluttering escapades, it was easy to find more than ten things to remove.

I encourage you to also remove at least 10 items from your home.… Continue reading
