Simplify Saturday: Recycle/ Shred Unneeded Files

I decided to go through and clean out my two nearly full 4-drawer file cabinets. I had paper files that I’ve been carrying around with me for a long time. Some of them were old tax files, but most of them were old school files.

In those cabinets I had copies of papers I’d written, old syllabi, as well as files from research projects I worked on.… Continue reading

Making Ice Pops: A Great Use for Leftover Smoothies

Making Ice Pops: A Great Use for Leftover SmoothiesWhen the weather is warm, we make a lots of smoothies and ice creams (see HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE for a few of the many recipes I’ve posted). When we make these things, I always make a rather big batch. We generally finish most of, if not all, of what I make at that same time. My boys, in general, eat a lot, though their appetites vary from day to day.… Continue reading

All-Natural Insect Bite and Sting Relief

Today my 6-year-old was sitting outside eating a fresh plum when all of a sudden he came into the house yelling that something was on him and his back was hurting. Sure enough, he had two insect bite marks on his back and one on his chest. Ouch!

So I made sure there was no longer any biting insects on him, pulled an ice pack out of our freezer, and had him lay down on the couch with the ice pack over the bites on his back while I went to close the door and grab a bottle of essential oil, Young Living’s Purification blend.… Continue reading

Healthy Snack: Fresh Plums

Healthy Snack: Fresh PlumsWe just had new neighbors move in across the street. We live in the mountains, and don’t have many people close by, but we’ve been fortunate that those who live around us are truly wonderful people. I’m excited about meeting the newest residents in our neighborhood, and want to greet them with a welcome gift in hand.

My son suggested making them some type of cookies or a cake, but I always feel nervous about bringing baked goods to people I don’t know.… Continue reading

Thought for the Day: Lennon-McCartney

Thought for the Day: Lennon-McCartney

“Everybody seems to think I’m lazy
I don’t mind, I think they’re crazy
Running everywhere at such a speed
Till they find there’s no need”

-Lennon-McCartney

A conversation with friends over the weekend brought to mind this quote from The Beatles song “I’m Only Sleeping.” The people I know are frequently so busy and trying to do so much; when will they realize that it’s okay to slow down?… Continue reading

Is Your Child Ready for First Grade in 1979?

Is your Child Ready for First Grade in 1979My oldest son is 6-years-old. This week, school starts here in our hometown. We homeschool our boys, so heading back to school doesn’t carry quite the same shift in our lives as it does in the lives of most people with children. That said, my oldest son is now entering First Grade.

A friend of mine, who’s son attends a local public school, stumbled upon this list and forwarded it to me asking, “Would our boys be ready for first grade in 1979?… Continue reading

Fruit-Sweetened Chai Banana Milkshake

Fruit-Sweetened Chai Banana MilkshakeToday it was milkshake time again. My boys and I spent hours out and about on a hot day running errands, and then we came home and spent some time working in our garden. Later that afternoon when my 6-year-old suggested making a milkshake, it sounded like the perfect way to cool us down after our busy, hot day.

I love chai spices, so I decided to try making a Fruit-Sweetened, Chai-Spiced Milkshake.… Continue reading

Simplify Saturday: Finding your Why

We all come at the idea of simplifying our lives from a different perspective. We each have our own motivations and reasons for wanting to simplify things. Having a Why is a powerful thing. It can challenge you to take an unexpected path and guide you as you make tough decisions.

For me, my highest priority is to have abundant time to spend with the people I love, both family and friends.… Continue reading

Fruit-Sweetened Fresh Peach Ice Cream

Fruit-Sweetened Fresh Peach Ice Cream RecipeWith local peaches in season here in Colorado, we’ve been enjoying an abundance of them. While we’ve been eating most of them in their wonderful, pure fresh peach (see HERE) form, today I decided to give Fresh Peach Ice Cream a try.

I wanted the peaches to shine, so I only added two other ingredients to the mix. I was about to grab some ground cinnamon, when on a whim I decided to use the apple pie spice we had received as a gift instead.… Continue reading

Snuggle Time as Meditation

Snuggle Time as MeditationBefore I had kids, I would begin my day with a few minutes of meditation. It was nothing very formal or prolonged, just a simple greeting the day by looking out the window to the world outside, then sitting down in a quiet place and checking in with myself.

I would sit quietly and listen to my body: was there anything it was trying to tell me?… Continue reading
