Thought for the Day: Whedon

Thought for the Day: Whedon

This week has been one of big passions.  While they’re not the sort of thing I normally think of as passion, I like Whedon’s use of the term to encompass all huge feelings.  Truly, they are the varied passions of our hearts.

To feel is part of what makes life grand, even when the feelings are difficult and laced with tremendous grief.… Continue reading

Letting my Kids Set Things on Fire

This week’s exciting learning experience: setting things on fire using a parabolic mirror.

While some parents might gasp – You’re encouraging your kids to set things on fire??!!” – I think it’s a good idea for children to learn about and experiment with fire.

After all, fire has been fundamental to the survival and development of humankind. … Continue reading

Going Completely Sugar Free

One of the things I’ve been doing to support my body in its recovery from my head injury (see HERE) is to eliminate all sugars from my diet.  (You can read about other ways I’ve helped my concussion recovery HERE).

When I say cut all sugars, what probably comes to mind is setting aside cakes and cookies and other sorts of treats. … Continue reading

Thought for the Day: Steinbeck

Thought for the Day, Steinbeck

As we travel down life’s road, there are a myriad of possible lives before us.  Each choice we make influences which possibilities lie ahead.  But the life we are given to live is the life that we are in right now.  The future paths we envision may or may not come to fruition.  Now is the time to live our lives, without too much fret for the future. … Continue reading

The Return of Tree Climbing Season

Spring is here, and with the rebirth of the world around us comes a reawakening of my boys’ desire to be up in the trees.  It doesn’t matter whether we’re in our own yard, at a park, along a hiking trail, or in front of our local library (where I took this particular picture), if they see a tree that looks good for climbing, they are ready to go.… Continue reading

Taking Time to Smell the Flowers

Taking Time to Smell the Flowers

I’ve been making a conscious effort to enjoy the moments that life sets before me.  My boys, who find wonder in everything, are a great help in this process.

Instead of rushing along when my 2-year-old asked, “Mama, what do irises smell like?” we all stopped to find out.

How do you make a point of slowing down to enjoy the everyday?Continue reading

Thought for the Day: Wallace

Thought for the Day, Wallace

We can choose what we think about as well as how we think about it.  In the further words of Wallace, this is one of life’s “great and terrible truth[s].”  In each situation we encounter, we can choose whether we view it as mundane or extraordinary.  We can decide whether it’s frustrating or amusing.  We can elect to see our circumstances as oppressive or inspiring.… Continue reading

Springtime Snow

Springtime SnowSpringtime in Colorado comes with a wide variety of weather.  Earlier this week, we were enjoying the sunshine and my boys were outside playing with water balloons.

Today we woke up to snow that sat higher than my little guy’s waist.  We’ve had well over 2 feet fall at our house.  This next week, forecasters are calling for temperatures in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. … Continue reading

Things Learned by Launching Stuff

We are fortunate to have fantastic resources for learning within our local community.  Not only do my boys (and I!) have opportunities to learn about all sorts of topics, we get to learn in fun, hands-on ways.

Last week we attended a workshop at our local library that allowed everyone to build and launch whatever type of object we could imagine (using the provided materials, of course). … Continue reading

Thought for the Day: Kornfield

Thought for the Day: Kornfield

Each day we have the chance to start again.  Yesterday has passed and is now gone.  Today is our opportunity to begin anew with the life we have set before us.

There are days when it feels really good to think about starting with a clean slate.  Let us make the most of our new day.

Each morning we are born again.  … Continue reading
