We frequently take food on the go. Whether we are eating a picnic in the park (or in our own yard), bringing food for a trip in the car, or simply sending a snack with my 6-year-old as he attends his weekly art class, we bring food with us almost every time we leave the house.
I used to use glass containers for packing almost all of this food. However, I was a bit concerned after a few too many drops and too much broken glass. While my son never broke a container at the art studio, I had visions of the glass containers I was sending him with dropping and breaking on the concrete floor and creating a huge mess for someone to clean up, not to mention the potential for someone getting hurt. I realized that I needed a more-durable option, especially for when my young boys were out by themselves.
I do not like the idea of putting any food in plastic, especially food for my children (you can read about the dangers of plastics HERE), so that eliminated most options aimed at kids. In the end, I bought a 100% stainless steel container for my 6-year-old to take to class with him. It’s a great size for a snack or a small lunch, has two separate compartments to keep foods separate, latches securely, and is easy for him to open and close. He loves having his own special lunch box to carry when he’s on the go. And I don’t have to worry about it accidentally dropping and breaking.
If you’re interested in a stainless steel container of your own, I bought ours at Life Without Plastic, where they carry a variety of options and sizes. You can also find a wide assortment of tiffins HERE and HERE. You can also find an array of non-tiffin style stainless steel containers HERE.
I think I “need” some of these for my upcoming birthday!! I have mostly pyrex/glass containers, but would like something for traveling with food (which we do a lot) that is not breakable…
We love ours. I’d highly recommend them!
