Involuntary Neglect

Have you ever suddenly realized that you’ve been neglectful of something that you care about? This morning I looked at my plants and realized it has been over two weeks since I’ve watered them. Yikes! (There’s also evidence of toddler damage, but that’s a different matter.) Between the holidays and traveling, I simply forgot to do it. They didn’t call loudly enough to be heard over the hustle and bustle of everything else; they just slowly started to wilt and dry out.

I did it with my plants, but it’s just as easy to accidentally neglect all sorts of things that we care about. With all of life’s busyness, it’s not difficult to reach the end of the day and realize that I haven’t moved my body as much as I should. It’s simple to choose convenience over making the time to prepare healthy, nourishing food. It’s easy to get caught up in work and obligations, and to miss the sweet things in life that are passing by unnoticed.

Today, let’s all take a deep breath, give ourselves grace for the things we’ve neglected, and choose to be mindful of the things both inside and around us that need our care.

I’m off to water my plants.
