Homemade Hot Golden Milk Recipe (Paleo, GAPS, Vegan)

Jump to recipe

Are you looking for a healthy, warming, caffeine-free alternative to hot chocolate?  This golden milk recipe might be exactly what you’re looking for.

My boys and I love this, whether as a relaxing drink before bed, or as an afternoon treat.  It even works well as a morning starter.  It’s slightly sweet, a little bit spicy (like a chai is spicy, not like a salsa is spicy), and full of healthy ingredients.

The milk, any type will work, makes it creamy.  Cinnamon is great for helping to regulate blood sugar.  Coconut oil is filled with medium-chain fatty acids, which are so good for your body.  Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory, as is ginger.  Peppercorns enhance the benefits of turmeric as well as promoting intestinal health.  All three of these spices are warming, and aid your body in detoxification.  Finally, stevia sweetens without raising your blood sugar.

There are many different recipes for golden milk out there.  I make mine as follows:

Golden Milk Recipe (Serves 1; easily multiplies for more people)

1 cup milk (coconut, almond, or any other milk of choice)
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon coconut oil
½ teaspoon to 1.5 teaspoons turmeric paste, to taste (recipe below)
½ teaspoon chopped fresh ginger, or 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
2-3 black peppercorns
7 drops liquid stevia

Simmer all ingredients for 10 minutes over low heat.

Strain the mixture into a mug.

Serve and enjoy.

Turmeric Paste Recipe

¼ cup water
¼ cup ground turmeric

Simmer over gentle heat for 5-7 minutes, until it forms a paste.

Store paste in a covered jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

If making your own golden milk seems too intimidating, you can pick up the ingredients pre-mixed (just add your own milk or water) for Golden Milk or [dairy-free] Golden Tea.
