I make my own Healing Skin Salve (recipe HERE), Amazing Face Serum (recipe HERE), and Diaper Cream (recipe HERE), so it probably comes as no surprise that I’ve also made my own lip balm. I first made a version of this recipe at a workshop hosted by some local bee keepers. The recipe worked so well, that with a couple slight variations I kept it as part of my natural body care routine.
This homemade lip balm is simple to make and very soothing for lips. The lanolin and beeswax provide a natural healing barrier to keep the moisture in and the dry air out. I generally use peppermint essential oil in my lip balm, which provides a pleasant cooling sensation. I’ve also used spearmint, cinnamon, and ginger.
To measure the ingredients in this recipe, I used a kitchen scale that has a tare feature, which allows you to easily weigh multiple items consecutively without removing the container from the scale.
Here’s how I made it.
Ingredients
- Healing Lip Balm
- 9 grams Lanolin
- 8 grams Almond or Olive Oil (substitute Castor Oil for more gloss)
- 3 grams Beeswax pastilles, or grated from a block
- ½ teaspoon Vitamin E
- 10-15 drops Peppermint (or other) Essential Oil
Instructions
- Add the beeswax, lanolin, almond, and vitamin E to a double boiler or to a glass measuring cup in a warm water bath.
- Warm over gentle heat until the beeswax is completely melted.
- Remove the mixture from the heat and cool it slightly.
- Add the essential oil and stir until completely mixed.
- Pour into lip balm tubes (one batch fills 4 standard tubes) or into small tins with lids.

*You want to make sure that the essential oils you’re using for this recipe are food grade as well as ensuring the plants they are derived from are free of pesticides and herbicides. Most essential oils are fragrance grade, which doesn’t have as high standards for purity. You can read more about the essential oils I use as well as why and how I use them HERE.
