Yesterday hosted a small birthday celebration for a dear, long-time friend (over 25 years!). She and the other friends present routinely spoil my boys, as well as my husband and me, so we took advantage of the situation to put together something special for them.
We have bag of plums, which were available unusually late in the season at our local farmer’s market last week. While we enjoyed many of them straight out of the bag, I decided to make something special with the rest.

I was looking for a simple, dairy-free treat to serve when some friends came over, and remembered seeing this recipe from Elana’s Pantry that I wanted to try. Yesterday my 6-year-old realized that he could read the word “cake.” (Yes, we’re still at the point where he’s very excited whenever he can read a new word.) He asked if we could make a cake to celebrate. How can I say no to that?
